Hot Springs grew up where thermal water comes out of the base of Hot Springs Mountain in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. On a map the historic core is unusually narrow. Central Avenue curves along a tight valley, with Bathhouse Row on one side and the downtown blocks on the other, and wooded ridges close in on both sides.
Much of the land around the springs is protected as Hot Springs National Park, one of the smallest national parks in the United States and one of the oldest protected areas in the federal system. South of town, Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine spread across the map, their shorelines lined with coves and inlets. Bill Clinton spent much of his childhood here.
