Ílhavo Map Poster & Print
Ílhavo lies just south of Aveiro in central Portugal, on the eastern side of the Ria de Aveiro, a wide coastal lagoon of channels, marshes and sandbanks. The town sits on slightly higher ground, while the municipality reaches west across the water to the narrow strip of dunes along the Atlantic, where the beach settlements of Costa Nova and Barra lie.
The town has deep ties to the sea. Generations of Ílhavo men sailed with the Portuguese cod fleet to the waters off Newfoundland and Greenland, a history told in the town's maritime museum. Ílhavo is also home to Vista Alegre, the porcelain manufacturer founded in the nineteenth century, whose factory and workers' village form a distinctive part of the town.
An Ílhavo map poster brings the lagoon to the fore: the branching channels and marsh islands, the bridges and causeways that cross them, and the straight strip of coast beyond. Few places in Portugal have such an intricate relationship between land and water, and it translates beautifully into a clean monochrome print.

Vista Alegre complex
The historic porcelain works and its village sit beside the lagoon, a compact planned ensemble that stands apart from the town's looser streets.

Kwa nini Ílhavo
Ramani yenye maana
Ílhavo speaks to anyone connected with the sea, the cod fleet or lagoon summers at Costa Nova. A map of its water and streets carries that story quietly, and it works as well in a coastal house as in a city flat far away.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Blueprint and Sand both suit the lagoon well. Buy the $9 digital set, or order a printed matte poster with an optional wooden frame.
