Jeypore lies on the Koraput plateau in southern Odisha, in the Eastern Ghats, high enough to have a milder climate than the coastal plains. The town's map mixes older lanes around the centre with newer roads extending outward. A large reservoir, the Jagannath Sagar, forms an open space within the town, and hills rise on the horizon.
Jeypore was the seat of a zamindari estate that once controlled a wide area of the southern hills, and its royal palace is still a local landmark. Today it is a commercial and educational hub for Koraput district. The region is known for its tribal communities and farming traditions, and the Kolab River and its reservoir are not far away.
