Jiang’an is a county of Yibin, in the south of Sichuan province, where the Yangtze flows east toward Luzhou and Chongqing. From above, the county town stretches along the river. Its streets follow the curve of the bank and climb a short way into the hills behind. The water forms a broad, strong edge across the map, with farmland and wooded slopes filling the land around the town.
Like much of the upper Yangtze, the area is hilly and green, with small valleys, terraced fields and villages linked by roads that follow the contours. The river has long been the main route for trade and travel here. The town's layout still faces the water rather than any single inland centre.
