Medieval planned grid
The old town is laid out in parallel streets inside a near-rectangular wall. It is an unusually regular plan for a medieval town, and it reads clearly at any size.

Karlstadt Map Poster & Print
Karlstadt lies on the left bank of the Main in Lower Franconia, north of Würzburg. Its old town is one of the clearest examples of a planned medieval town in the region: a near-rectangle of parallel streets, founded by the bishops of Würzburg around 1200 and still largely enclosed by its walls and towers. From above, the regularity is striking.
Across the river, on a wooded hill, stand the ruins of the Karlsburg, a castle older than the town itself. Vineyards cover some of the surrounding slopes, as they do along much of the Main valley, and a large cement works on the edge of town reflects the limestone geology of the area. Railway and roads follow the valley.
A Karlstadt map poster brings these elements together. The rectangle of the old town sits against the curve of the Main, a bridge links it to the opposite bank, and newer districts extend along the valley and up the slopes. It is a compact, well-balanced composition, and the medieval grid gives the print an almost architectural clarity.

The Main river
The Main runs broad and gently curving along one side of the old town. It defines a full edge of the composition and separates the town from the hills opposite.
Karlsburg ruins
On the hill across the river, the ruins of the Karlsburg overlook the town. On the map the site sits among woods and slopes, directly opposite the walled centre.
