Katwa lies in the highlands of North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, next to the trading city of Butembo. It is almost on the equator, only a few kilometres north of the line, but because it sits high up the climate is cooler than that position would suggest. The land is broken into ridges and valleys, and the settlement spreads across them.
On a map this terrain produces an irregular, organic pattern. Roads follow ridgelines and valley floors instead of a grid, and smaller tracks branch off toward farms and neighbouring communities. There are no big planned axes. What you see is a web that has grown to fit the hills, thicker where the town meets Butembo and thinner as it reaches out into the farmland around it.
