Kirovo-Chepetsk lies in Kirov Oblast, near the point where the Cheptsa River flows into the Vyatka. From above, the town sits on higher ground above the rivers, with wide floodplains, oxbow lakes and meadows below. Forest surrounds much of the landscape, and the rivers bend through it in long, soft curves.
The town grew in the mid-twentieth century around a large chemical plant, and its plan shows that: straight avenues, residential blocks set in regular groups, and a separate industrial zone to one side. Railway lines connect the plant and town with Kirov, the regional centre, a short distance away. The layout is orderly, with generous spaces between buildings.
