Kohtla-Järve is one of the most unusual cities in Estonia on a map. Instead of a single compact centre, it consists of several districts separated by forest, fields and other municipalities, the main ones being Järve and Ahtme, with smaller parts such as Sompa and Kukruse. Seen from above, the city looks like a set of islands spread across north-eastern Estonia.
This shape comes from oil shale. Settlements grew around the mines and processing plants of Ida-Virumaa, and they were joined administratively into one city in the Soviet period.
