Kostanay lies in the far north of Kazakhstan, where open steppe meets the valley of the Tobol river. It was founded in 1879 as a trading and settler town, and its layout shows that clearly: a regular grid of long, straight streets set beside the river, with little of the irregularity of older cities.
From above, the Tobol runs along the city's edge with a wooded floodplain and several meanders. The residential blocks extend away from it in even rows, while later districts of apartment blocks and industrial areas surround the core. Beyond the city, fields and steppe stretch out in large, regular squares.

The central streets run in long, parallel lines and meet at right angles. This regular layout dates back to the town's founding in the late nineteenth century.
