Lanaken is in the province of Limburg, in Flanders, on the Belgian side of the border with the Netherlands. Maastricht lies just across the frontier. On the map, the town and its sub-villages form a loose chain of settlements, linked by roads that run towards the Dutch city and deeper into Belgium.
