Lavras lies among the rolling hills of southern Minas Gerais, and on a map its streets rarely run straight for long. The centre sits on uneven ground, with roads climbing ridges and dropping into small valleys, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the slopes. Farmland, patches of woodland and stream valleys fill the countryside between the town and its neighbours.
The town is best known for the Federal University of Lavras, a leading institution in agricultural sciences, whose campus covers a large area on the edge of town. The university brings a large student population and ties Lavras closely to farming and research across a region known for coffee and dairy.
