Lingen, in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony, stands on the Ems River not far from the Dutch border. On a map, two waterways run close together past the town: the natural, winding Ems and the straight, man-made Dortmund-Ems Canal. Near them lies a compact old centre whose streets gather around a historic market square.
Around that core the plan opens out into residential districts, industrial areas and green corridors, with the railway crossing through. The Lingen map poster shows how the historic centre, the postwar growth and the waterways fit together in one frame. The canal gives the image a firm straight line against the softer curve of the river.
