Lisse lies in the Duin- en Bollenstreek, the strip of sandy land between Leiden and Haarlem best known for growing flower bulbs. Seen from above, the town is a compact core surrounded by a patchwork of long, narrow fields, each separated by straight ditches that give the landscape a ruled, almost graphic quality.
The town is internationally known as the home of Keukenhof, the spring flower garden that opens each year on the grounds of a former castle estate. On the map its curving paths and ponds stand out against the geometric fields around it, one of the few places where lines bend freely.
