Longfeng lies in the Enshi area of south-western Hubei, a region of steep limestone mountains, gorges and narrow valleys. From above, the land is folded into ridges, and settlement is squeezed into whatever level ground the valleys offer. The town's streets follow that ground in an elongated shape. Roads wind in along the valley and climb away around the hillsides in tight curves.
Enshi is a mountainous prefecture with a large Tujia and Miao population, known for its tea gardens, terraced farmland and rugged scenery. Around Longfeng, the map shows scattered villages, terraces and small fields on the slopes. Newer building has spread outwards as the Enshi area has grown, filling the valley floor with larger modern blocks.
