Lourdes sits where the Gave de Pau comes out of the Pyrenees into the foothills. The river bends sharply through the town and splits it in two. On the east side is the old town, with its tight streets around a rocky outcrop. The Château Fort stands on top of that rock, overlooking the valley.
West of the river lies the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. Its large open esplanades, basilicas and the grotto of Massabielle fill the riverbank, where Bernadette Soubirous reported her visions in 1858. The streets between the sanctuary and the old town are packed with hotels. Few towns this size have so many beds for visitors.

The sanctuary is a large, open area of esplanades, basilicas and paths on the river's west bank. It is far more open than the dense streets nearby.

The Château Fort sits on a rocky spur above the old town. It is the high point that tight lanes and staircases lead up to.
