Macuba is in Rwanda's Western Province, in the highlands east of Lake Kivu. This is hill country. The land rises and falls in ridges and valleys, and most settlement follows the high ground and the slopes, where smallholdings and cultivated terraces cover the hills. Life here is closely tied to farming, and the landscape reflects centuries of careful use of steep, fertile ground.
