Mapusa sits a few kilometres inland from the North Goa coast, on rising ground above the river that shares its name. From above, the town has no strict grid. Streets curve around small hills and hollows, and the densest part gathers around the central market, where several main roads meet before heading off toward the beaches, Panaji and the northern border.
The town is best known for its Friday market, a weekly gathering of traders, farmers and shoppers from across the region that has long made Mapusa the commercial heart of Bardez taluka. On a map, that role shows in how the roads work: they all point toward the middle, then thin out into looser lanes lined with houses, churches and temples.
