Mene Grande lies in the state of Zulia, on the lowlands east of Lake Maracaibo. On a map it looks like a spread-out settlement rather than a place with a dense centre. Residential streets follow the main roads, with gaps left by former oil installations and open land. The town holds an important place in Venezuelan history. In 1914 the Zumaque I well struck oil here.
