Meppen is the district town of Emsland in Lower Saxony, near the Dutch border. It grew at the confluence of the Hase and the Ems, and water defines its map: the two rivers meet at the edge of the old town, and the Dortmund-Ems Canal runs alongside, adding a straight artificial line to the natural curves. The historic centre sits within this watery frame.
The town was once a fortress, and although most of the defences are gone, their outline is still suggested by the shape of the old centre and the green spaces around it.
