Mountsorrel lies in the Soar valley in Leicestershire, between Leicester and Loughborough. From above, the old village follows a long main street running roughly parallel to the River Soar, whose navigation, with its locks and cuts, traces a second line through the valley floor just to the east.
The village takes its name from the pinkish granite of the hill behind it, and quarrying has shaped the landscape for centuries. To the west, the vast Mountsorrel quarry cuts a deep, terraced hollow into the land, one of the largest granite workings in Europe, and it looks striking even at map scale.
