Mudanya lies on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara in Bursa Province, serving as the city of Bursa's gateway to the sea. The map shows a town stretched along the coast, with a waterfront road and piers at its edge and streets climbing inland up the slopes behind. Olive groves and newer residential districts extend east and west along the shore.
Mudanya holds an important place in modern Turkish history: the Armistice of Mudanya was signed here in October 1922, bringing an end to the fighting of the Turkish War of Independence. The building where it was signed is now a museum. The town also preserves old stone and timber houses, and ferries link it across the Marmara to Istanbul.
