Muret lies on the Garonne about twenty kilometres upstream of Toulouse, and the river dominates its map. The broad, braided water runs along the eastern side of the town. The small Louge joins it close to the old centre, and together the two streams frame a tight historic core. Further out, residential districts and business parks spread westward across the flat plain.
The town is best known for the Battle of Muret in 1213. It was a decisive moment in the Albigensian Crusade: the forces of Simon de Montfort defeated King Peter II of Aragon beneath the walls. Muret is also the birthplace of Clément Ader, the engineer and aviation pioneer. His name appears widely across the town.
