From above, Naju reads as two towns sharing one river valley. The older centre sits near the Yeongsan River, its streets gathered around the outline of a former walled town, while farmland and orchards spread across the flat ground beyond. A short distance away, a planned district of broad roads and regular blocks shows how recently the city has grown.
That newer quarter is Bitgaram, Naju's innovation city, built to take in public institutions moved out of the capital region, including the headquarters of the Korea Electric Power Corporation. Naju is also known across Korea for its pears, grown in orchards that fill much of the surrounding countryside.
