Nayagarh is the headquarters of Nayagarh district in Odisha, set inland from the coast between rolling hills and farmland. Before Indian independence it was the seat of a princely state, and the town still carries the loose, organic plan of an older settlement that grew around its centre rather than being laid out in one piece.
On the map, the streets form an irregular web with a few stronger roads running through it, connecting the town to the wider district. Ponds and tanks appear as small, clean shapes among the blocks, and the edges of town soften into paddy fields, villages and patches of wooded hill country.
