Newmarket lies north of Toronto in York Region, and from above it shows the pattern common to southern Ontario. Long concession roads cross at right angles and divide the land into big rectangles. Inside them, suburban streets loop and curve in crescents and cul-de-sacs, a softer texture set within the rigid survey lines.
The East Holland River runs through the middle of town in a green corridor. Fairy Lake, a small pond on the river, sits near the old centre. Historic Main Street runs close to the valley, lined with nineteenth-century buildings, and Yonge Street, one of the province's oldest roads, passes along the town's western side.
