Nowa Ruda lies in the Kłodzko region of Lower Silesia, close to the Owl Mountains, and its plan is shaped by the terrain. The town runs along a narrow river valley, with streets climbing the slopes on either side and forested hills pressing in around the edges.
At the centre is an old market square with the tight blocks of a Silesian town around it, from which lanes branch up and down the valley. For generations Nowa Ruda was a coal-mining town, and its outskirts still show the traces of pits and industry. Before 1945 it was the German town of Neurode.
