Nutley is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, a few miles north of Newark and about ten miles west of Manhattan. Its eastern edge follows the Passaic River, and the map is shaped by that line: streets run inland from the river in a fairly regular grid, broken by parks, schools and the curves of older roads.
The Third River cuts through the township, and green corridors along its banks create long, narrow parks that stand out clearly on the map. Nutley's history includes the sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who lived here in the 1890s, and decades as the United States headquarters of the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche.
