Paso Robles sits in northern San Luis Obispo County, in the inland valleys of California's Central Coast. Its map has a clear centre: a compact downtown grid laid out around a square city park, with older residential blocks spreading outward in a regular pattern. On the east side, the Salinas River runs north through a broad, mostly dry bed, dividing the old town from newer neighbourhoods.
The city's full name, El Paso de Robles, means the pass of the oaks, and the rolling countryside around it is still scattered with them. Paso Robles is best known today as the centre of a large wine region, and beyond the edge of town the map loosens into winding rural roads through vineyard hills. The area has also been known for its hot springs since the nineteenth century.
