Qiryat Shmona lies at the northern end of the Hula Valley in the Upper Galilee, close to the borders with Lebanon and Syria. On a map the city sits where the flat valley floor meets a steep escarpment rising to the west. Streets fill the space between, climbing a little way up the slope before giving way to open hillside.
The layout reflects its origins as a development town founded in the years after 1949.
