Ra-ngae is a district in Narathiwat province, in the far south of Thailand close to the Malaysian border. Its main town lies inland from the coast, in a landscape of rubber plantations, orchards, rice fields and scattered villages. On a map the town forms a compact centre of streets, with roads threading outward into the green countryside that surrounds it on every side.
The population of the area is largely Malay Muslim, and mosques, markets and village communities shape the character of the district. The town serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding villages, and its layout reflects that role: a small core of shops and offices along the main roads, with houses and gardens spreading out along the routes into the countryside.
