Racibórz lies on the upper Oder in southern Poland, close to the Czech border. The river runs north through the town, and from above the historic centre is easy to find: a market square with streets branching from its corners, set on the west bank. On the opposite side, near a bridge, stands the castle of the old dukes of Racibórz.
For centuries the town was the seat of a Silesian duchy under the Piast dynasty, and the castle chapel of Saint Thomas Becket is considered one of the finest Gothic interiors in the region. Later, Racibórz belonged to Bohemia and Prussia before becoming part of Poland after 1945.
