Ras Tanura occupies a long, thin spit of land that extends north into the Persian Gulf from the coast of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. From above, the shape is unmistakable: a finger of sand with water on both sides, the shoreline broken by piers and jetties, and a single main corridor running along its length to the end of the peninsula.
The town is one of the key sites of the Saudi oil industry. Saudi Aramco operates a large refinery here along with one of the world's biggest crude oil export terminals, and the industrial layout of storage tanks and loading berths takes up much of the peninsula. Near the tip, a planned residential community with curving streets and green spaces offers a very different pattern.
