Renca is one of the communes of Greater Santiago, in the northwest of the capital. Its map is organised around Cerro Renca, a hill that rises abruptly from the flat basin and breaks up the street grid with its open slopes. Around it, residential streets form dense, regular blocks. The Mapocho river runs along the southern side of the commune.
Major roads cross Renca, including the Américo Vespucio ring road and highways linking Santiago with the north of the country. Industrial zones and warehouses occupy large plots along these routes. The hill offers views across the Santiago basin towards the Andes and gives this busy part of the city its main open space.
