Retford is a market town in north Nottinghamshire, split by the River Idle into East and West Retford. From above, the older streets gather around a central market square, and the map fills with terraces and later housing estates beyond them. The river winds north through the town, and the Chesterfield Canal cuts a separate, more deliberate line across it.
The town has held a market for centuries, and the square is still its main open space. Retford is also a stop on the East Coast Main Line, where it is known among railway enthusiasts for an unusual flat crossing, later replaced by a dive-under, with the east–west line to Lincoln. These layers of transport, from canal to river to rail, give the town its shape on the map.
