River Falls lies in western Wisconsin, a short drive east of the Twin Cities and the St. Croix River. The Kinnickinnic River runs through the centre of town, and its falls gave the place its name. The downtown grid sits on either side of the river, and from above the water's winding course is the most distinctive feature of the map.
The University of Wisconsin–River Falls occupies a large campus near downtown, with quads, halls and athletic fields. The Kinnickinnic is also known as one of the best trout streams in the region, and efforts to protect its cold, spring-fed water have shaped how the town treats its riverbanks and parks.
