Rocky River sits on the south shore of Lake Erie just west of Cleveland, and its edges are unusually clear on a map. The lake closes it off to the north. To the east, the river that gives the town its name runs through a steep, wooded valley. The town lies between them as a tidy suburban grid of tree-lined residential streets.
The river valley is protected as part of the Cleveland Metroparks. Seen from above, it forms a long, winding band of green with only a few roads crossing it. The bridges that span the gorge are among the town's most recognisable structures. Near the river mouth, the valley opens out into marinas and a small harbour on the lake.
