Saint-Véran sits at about 2,040 metres. It is often described as the highest village in France and one of the highest inhabited villages in Europe. On a map it appears as a compact cluster stretched along a south-facing slope above the valley of the Aigue Blanche. Its lanes run across the hillside instead of straight up it.
The village is part of the Queyras Regional Natural Park and is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its traditional houses have stone ground floors and large timber upper storeys that were used for drying hay. A small observatory stands on a nearby summit, where the clear, dry mountain air is good for watching the sky.
