Salem is an independent city in western Virginia, sharing the Roanoke Valley with its larger neighbour, Roanoke. The Roanoke River runs along the southern side of the city, and the main street grid lies parallel to it. The city stretches east to west along the valley floor, with wooded Appalachian ridges rising on either side.
Main Street forms the historic spine. Older blocks line it near the county courthouse and Roanoke College, whose campus sits close to downtown. Interstate 81 passes along the northern edge, and rail lines follow the river. Salem has long hosted NCAA Division III championships, and for a quarter of a century it was home to the Stagg Bowl, the national football final.
