Santa Luzia Map Poster & Print
Santa Luzia lies just northeast of Belo Horizonte, within the capital's metropolitan area, and its layout reflects two eras. The historic centre sits on a ridge above the Rio das Velhas, a legacy of the eighteenth-century gold-rush settlements of Minas Gerais. Below and around it, much larger residential districts have spread across the hills and valleys as the metropolis has grown.
The old town preserves colonial churches and houses along its main street, which follows the line of the ridge. The river runs past the foot of the hill and was once an important route in the region. Today most residents live in the newer neighbourhoods, many of which commute to Belo Horizonte, while the historic core retains its separate character.
A Santa Luzia map poster shows the narrow line of the old town along the crest of the hill, the curving course of the Rio das Velhas and the dense, irregular streets of the later districts spreading across the hilly terrain. It is a map where colonial past and metropolitan present sit side by side.

Rio das Velhas
The river winds past the old town and through the municipality, providing a natural curve that contrasts with the steep streets around it.
Metropolitan districts
Large residential neighbourhoods stretch over the surrounding hills, their dense and irregular street patterns following the uneven terrain toward Belo Horizonte.
