Santo Antônio do Leverger lies on the Cuiabá River, south of the Mato Grosso state capital, Cuiabá. On a map, the river is the defining line. The town takes its name in part from Augusto Leverger, a French-born naval officer who served as president of the province of Mato Grosso in the nineteenth century.
