São Desidério lies in western Bahia, in the cerrado country west of the São Francisco River, close to Barreiras and to the fast-growing city of Luís Eduardo Magalhães. The municipality is very large, but the town at its centre is small, a modest arrangement of streets along a river valley. The true scale appears only when the map zooms out across the plateau.
The municipality ranks among Brazil's leading producers of soybeans and cotton, and much of its land is given over to large mechanised farms. It is also known for a karst landscape of limestone caves, sinkholes and clear blue pools that draw cave explorers and divers.
