Schagen sits in the low, reclaimed landscape of North Holland, north of Alkmaar, and the map makes that flatness visible. Around the town, the countryside is divided into long rectangular parcels separated by ditches and waterways, a pattern of straight lines typical of Dutch polder land. The town itself interrupts this grid with a denser, more irregular historic centre.
The core grew around the castle of Schagen, whose surviving tower still stands at the heart of town, and around a market square that remains the focus of local life. Newer residential neighbourhoods spread outward in planned blocks and curving streets, while the railway between Alkmaar and Den Helder passes along the town, adding a firm diagonal to the composition.
Schagen is known for its summer markets, when traditional West Frisian dress and crafts fill the centre.
