Schönebeck lies on the Elbe just south of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt. On the map, the river is the strongest feature: a wide band that bends along the edge of town, with meadows and floodplain on the other side. The town's history is tied to salt. Brine was drawn here for centuries, and the Bad Salzelmen district grew into one of the early spa resorts in Germany.
