Şebin Karahisar sits in the uplands of southern Giresun, far from the province's Black Sea shore. The name refers to the black fortress on the rock above the town, and from above the logic is easy to read. The crag is the fixed point, and the streets arrange themselves around its base, following the contours rather than a grid. Roads leave the centre in long switchbacks toward the surrounding valleys.
On paper the town is a study in terrain. Short lanes climb in steps, blocks change direction from one slope to the next, and the built-up area soon thins into open hillside.
