Settiyārpatti lies in southern Tamil Nadu, in the flat agricultural country that stretches east from the foot of the Western Ghats. From above it is a compact settlement: a cluster of streets and closely built homes, a few roads linking it to nearby towns and villages, and a broad surround of fields and irrigation tanks.
The mountains of the Western Ghats rise not far to the west, and they shape the whole region, feeding the streams and tanks that water the farmland. On a map the land around the town is crossed by channels and field boundaries, with small reservoirs appearing as quiet, pale shapes.
