Shoham is a young town in central Israel, founded in the 1990s on low hills at the edge of the coastal plain, a few kilometres east of Ben Gurion Airport. Because it was planned as a whole, its map looks unlike older towns: streets curve with the terrain in long arcs and loops, and neighbourhoods are separated by strips of parks and open space.
Shoham takes its name from a Hebrew word for a precious stone, often translated as onyx, one of the stones of the biblical High Priest's breastplate. The town is mostly residential, with schools, commercial centres and sports grounds set within the neighbourhoods, and the wooded slopes of Ben Shemen Forest lie close by, adding a large open mass to the edges of the map.
