Şile lies on the Black Sea coast at the far north-eastern edge of Istanbul province, well away from the city's dense centre. On a map, the town fills a low headland. Its streets curve around the slope and drop towards a small harbour. Sandy beaches run off to either side, and a rocky islet with the remains of a castle sits just offshore.
The town is known for Şile bezi, a light, crinkled cotton cloth woven here for generations. It is also known for its lighthouse, a stone tower from the nineteenth century that still stands on the cliff above the harbour. Behind the coast the land turns green and hilly, cut by small streams and forest roads.
