Sligo is the main town of County Sligo, built where the Garavogue River runs its brief course from Lough Gill to Sligo Bay. On a map the river divides the centre into two halves joined by several bridges. The lake spreads to the east and the tidal bay opens to the west, so the town sits in an unusually watery setting.
The streets of the old centre follow the river and the lines of the medieval town that grew around Sligo Abbey, a ruined Dominican friary founded in the thirteenth century.
