Słubice lies on the Oder River in western Poland, directly opposite the German city of Frankfurt an der Oder. Until 1945 it was the eastern district of that city, known as Dammvorstadt, and the border drawn along the river after the Second World War turned it into a separate Polish town. On a map the two halves still face each other across the water.
The streets extend eastward from the bridge, with a broad main axis leading into the centre and residential blocks arranged around it. To the north and south, the Oder's floodplain leaves wide areas of meadow and wetland along the bank, so the built area sits back from the water and the river itself becomes a strong, open line.
