Soledade is a municipality in the interior of Paraíba, in Brazil's Northeast, west of Campina Grande on the Borborema plateau. This is semi-arid country, with thin vegetation, seasonal streams and wide open ground, and the map reflects it. The town is a small, compact grid of streets and squares, and beyond it the land opens out, crossed only by a few roads and tracks.
Like many towns in the sertão and the cariri, Soledade is built around a main square and a church, with houses in continuous rows along the streets. Riverbeds that are dry for much of the year run past the edges, and they show up as thin, winding lines. Small reservoirs, called açudes, store water for the dry season and appear as irregular shapes on the surrounding land.
